We have a garden!

It seems like we were just starting but now I’m so proud to say that Charros Garden has arrived! If you are not able to come down to the site in person and see just what our volunteers have accomplished, then please check out our Flickr stream from the “More Photos” link on the right. These pictures document the process from start to finish. I think you’ll be suitably impressed by what has become of a once empty and bare lot!

This has been a tremendous experience, one which I feel so grateful to have been a part of. We had incredible volunteers who worked so hard to build this space. It quite literally could not have happened without them. Each one deserves a heartfelt Thank You (and possibly a bottle or two of linament – will our backs ever forget those rocks??). I know we’re all very excited to see what our shiny new plots will bring forth come the Spring!

I’m looking forward to working with all the gardeners during our inaugural growing season!

Upcoming work party

We’ve scheduled a work party for this Sunday, November 6th from 10.30 to 3.30pm (depending on how quickly we get our tasks done, we may finish earlier).

On the agenda for your gardening enjoyment : planting, as well as collecting leaves for the garden beds. For the leaves we’ll be visiting nearby parks and other spaces, and gathering up as many leaves as we can, which will then be spread on the garden beds. If you have access to a vehicle we would appreciate it if you could bring it along so we can more easily transport the bags of leaves to the garden.

If you haven’t been down to Charros lately, I encourage you to visit and see how wonderful the space looks with it’s fancy new fence and smart gravel pathways!

Cancellation

We’ve had to cancel our work party session scheduled for Sunday, October 23rd (9am to 3pm) because the gravel supplier was unable to find enough gravel to deliver. We’re now looking at doing this next weekend, and will hopefully confirm some new work party dates by Monday. Thanks for your patience!

Upcoming gardening workshops

I know I’m not the only newbie at Charros who has questions about what to do once we’re faced with a garden bed full of soil! The North Shore Recycling Program, in conjunction with the Edible Garden Project and the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre, puts on the GardenSmart Workshop Series which can be of great use to both new and experienced gardeners. Coming up are two workshops which would be very useful to anyone thinking ahead to next year’s gardening season:

Planning Your First Vegetable Garden (November 5th, 1.00-2.30pm)
Growing Great Garlic (October 22nd, 1.00-2.30)

Both workshops are only $5! For that price, you could attend both – I know I am!

Cancellation + new work party dates

Please be advised we have cancelled the work party scheduled for Sunday, October 16th (10am to 3pm).

The next work party dates will be as follows:

Wednesday, October 19th – 2pm to 5pm
Saturday, October 22nd – 3pm to 6pm
Sunday, October 23rd – 9am to 3pm

The calendar has been updated accordingly.

See you in the garden!
